Oncology Infusion Nurse (Fresno, CA)

Full Time and Per Diem position open.
JOB PURPOSE: Responsible for providing oncology nursing care, support, education and infusion therapy to patients undergoing cancer care and/or treatments.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Functions as a coordinator of care, collaborating with other cancer care providers and team members to provide required care and treatments as effectively as possible at all stages of illness from diagnosis to terminal.
• Educates the patient and his/her caregiver about the prescribed therapies and documents patient/caregiver’s comprehension of the procedure and answers any questions.
• Delivers the infusion drug according to manufacturers and physician guidelines.
• Executes prescribed infusion and injectable therapies, inserts intravenous cannulas; administers prescribed intravenous solutions, medications, and blood products; monitors and documents patient’s progress and response.
• Educates patients on discharge instructions post infusion and ensures appropriate follow up is scheduled.
• Under the direction of oncologists and pharmacists, manages illness and treatment-related symptoms. Utilizes most appropriate pain management techniques and communicates patient needs to physicians immediately so to coordinate appropriate treatment plan efficiently.
• Ensures patient’s physician is aware of patient’s lab work, home medications, and activities.
• Obtains and documents, vital signs, health risk factors and assesses patient condition.
• Ensures patient consent has been appropriately attained and maintains patient confidentiality.
• Refers to/consults with physicians, other health providers and community resources to prevent/resolve problems.
• Provide quality care in compliance with the oncology nursing standards of the practice, CCFMG policy and procedure and CCFMG Nursing Scope of Practice.
• Participates in continuing education, support groups and charitable events as requested. Stays current with advances in the technology of infusion therapies and community resources that may benefit our patients.
• Helps patients live with cancer, retaining autonomy and independence.JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• Registered Nurse required; prefer Bachelor of Science in Nursing.Experience:
• Minimum two years experience as registered nurse with oncology emphasis, preferably in an Infusion Center setting.Other Requirements:
• Current California RN license.
• Current BLS certification; ACLS certification preferred.
• Oncology Certified Nurse; or ability to obtain OCN certification.PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge:
• Knowledge of nursing principles and standards of practice.
• Knowledge of oncology practices and treatments.
• Knowledge of state-of-the-art developments in cancer diagnosis and therapy.
• Knowledge of quality assurance, infection control, safety, and confidentiality protocols, regulations and patient transfer protocols.Skills:
• Demonstrated skill in administering chemotherapy and other treatments therapies and PICC care and maintenance.
• Skill in evaluating patients’ learning needs and designing appropriate education about their treatment.
• Skill in initiating appropriate crisis intervention and emergency response.Abilities:
• Ability to empathize with patients and families and to deal with grief and difficult patient interactions.
• Ability to analyze the patients’ lab work, medications, and activities and confer with physicians on any changes.
• Ability to read and interpret physicians’ orders and notes from other providers.
• Ability to work well in a team-centered environment.
• Ability to cope with death and dying.Equipment Operated:
• Clinical equipments, instruments, and supplies appropriate for oncology infusion center. May require use of assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks.
• Standard office equipment including computers for records and reports.Work Environment:
• Medical exam/treatment rooms and medical offices. Exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, and other conditions related to medical setting.Physical Requirements:
• Combination of standing, sitting, bending, walking and reaching. Occasionally must lift/carry/move up to 35 pounds.
• Occasional need to lift patient during transfer with or without assistance.
• Stress related to interactions with patients dealing with life-threatening illness.- Location: Fresno, CA
